Check Your Analytics Is Actually Working | Module 6.1
Before you trust any numbers, you need to confirm Google Analytics is tracking real visitors. This quick win shows you how to check that your data is real, not broken or missing.
Installing Google Analytics is only half the job.
The other half is making sure it is actually working.
You would be surprised how many websites have Analytics installed incorrectly. The code is there, but it is not tracking anything. That leads to confusion, bad decisions, or people giving up on SEO because they think nothing is happening.
This quick win helps you confirm that Google Analytics is collecting real data from real visitors, starting with you.
Think of this as checking that the CCTV camera is turned on before reviewing the footage.
Step 1: Open the Realtime Report
Do this
- Sign in to Google Analytics.
- Click Reports in the left menu.
- Click Realtime.
You should now see a screen showing active users on your site right now.
If this is your first time here, do not worry if everything looks empty. That is normal until someone visits.
Why this matters
Realtime is the fastest way to confirm whether tracking works. You do not need to wait hours or days to know if Analytics is collecting data.
Step 2: Visit Your Website Like a Real User
Do this
- Open your website in a new browser tab.
- Ideally, use a different browser to the one Analytics is open in.
- For example, Analytics in Safari and your website in Chrome.
- Visit your homepage.
- Click through one or two pages.
- Stay on each page for at least 10 to 20 seconds.
Act like a real visitor, not just a quick click.
Why this matters
Some tracking issues only show up when pages fully load or when visitors move between pages.
Step 3: Confirm You Appear in Realtime
Check this
Within about 30 seconds, you should see:
- At least one active user
- The page you are currently viewing
- Possibly your location or device type
If you see yourself, your tracking is working.
If you do not see anything after a full minute, there is likely a setup issue.
Why this matters
If you cannot see your own visit, Google cannot see your customers either.
Step 4: Common Reasons Realtime Shows Nothing
If you do not appear, check these common issues:
- The Measurement ID was pasted into the wrong place
- The code was added but not saved
- Caching is preventing the code from loading
- You are logged into the site as an admin and tracking is blocked
- An ad blocker or privacy extension is active
Do this
- Try another browser.
- Try incognito mode.
- Disable ad blockers temporarily.
- Clear your site cache if your platform uses one.
Then repeat Steps 2 and 3.
Step 5: Check the Date and Property
This sounds simple, but it causes a lot of confusion.
Do this
- Make sure you are viewing the correct property in Google Analytics.
- Check that the date range includes today.
GA4 shows data by property. If you have more than one website, it is easy to look at the wrong one.
Why this matters
Looking at the wrong property makes it look like tracking is broken when it is not.
Step 6: What to Do If It Still Does Not Work
If Realtime still shows nothing after troubleshooting:
- Revisit the installation steps from earlier in Module 6
- Check your platform’s help documentation for GA4 setup
- Contact your hosting provider or platform support
Most website builders have one-click or guided GA4 integration. You do not need a developer for this in most cases.
What Is Realistic at This Stage
When tracking first starts:
- Realtime data appears immediately
- Other reports take 24 to 48 hours to populate
- Numbers will be small at first
Low numbers do not mean failure. They mean you are early.
Why This Quick Win Matters
Every decision in SEO depends on data:
- What content to improve
- What pages to focus on
- Whether SEO is working at all
If your data is wrong, your decisions will be wrong.
This quick win makes sure you are starting from solid ground.
Quick Win Summary
- You checked Realtime reports
- You confirmed your own visit appears
- You know how to troubleshoot if it does not
- You can now trust the data going forward
Once this is working, you are ready to move on to using analytics instead of guessing.
